Tattoo Traditions of Hawai’i describes the evolution of Hawaiian tattooing as an art and science, tracing the practice from its early roots in ancient Polynesia. It presents motif, meaning, placement, the tools and techniques used along with personal observations and commentary in meticulous and graphic detail. It also discusses contemporary Hawaiian tattooing within the context of contact with the Western world and includes drawings of designs and patterns for ideas and consideration. About the Author Photographer, tattooist, and anthropologist Tricia Allen completed her master’s thesis at the University of Hawai’i on the ancient practice of Marquesan tattooing in 1992. Since then, she has traveled throughout the Pacific Islands documenting the traditional arts and dance of the various island groups, focusing on traditional tattooing and body art. Her work has taken her to the Marquesas Islands, Tahiti, Rapa Nui (Easter Island), New Caledonia, Aotearoa (New Zealand), and Samoa. Although her permanent home is still in Hawai’i, she regularly schedules trips to California to personally tattoo members of the Polynesian community by advance appointment. |
